A template text, or simply a template, is any written text (copy) that can be reused in new contexts or applications without significant changes to the original. This term is used to refer to statements, contracts, and source code, and is often used in a pejorative sense to describe clichéd or unoriginal texts

Originally, the term "printing plate" referred to rolled steel used to make boilers for heating water. Metal printing plates (type) for hot metal typesetting of prepared text, such as advertisements or syndicated columns, were distributed to small local newspapers and, by analogy, came to be called "printing plates." One of the major suppliers of such newspaper templates was the Western Newspaper Union, which provided "ready-to-print articles" containing national or international news to newspapers with a smaller geographic reach, allowing them to include advertisements preprinted alongside regular content.

In computer programming, boilerplate code refers to sections of code that must be included in many places with little or no alteration. Such code is especially noticeable when a programmer needs to include large portions just to enable minimal functionality.

Template language can also be used in pre-written formal letters. In this case, the person sending the formal letter usually only needs to add their name at the end of a pre-written greeting and body. Typically, the sender needs to personalize the letter only minimally, often just by adding their name or specific details to the prewritten content, making such templates very convenient for mass communication or repetitive correspondence.
